The City of Abbotsford today is a thriving multicultural community, but what many people don’t know is that this has been the case since the city’s pioneer years. One of the earliest sites of multiculturalism in Abbotsford is the Abbotsford Lumber Company, a lumber mill which sat along what is now appropriately called Mill Lake. The mill and its relationship with its diverse employees have been celebrated positively as the City’s first demonstration of intercultural engagement. Learning about these constructive relationships at the Abbotsford Lumber Company is important, but it is of equal significance to understand that depending on the cultural perspective, working at the mill could also be a negative experience. Abbotsford’s residents were not immune to racist feelings, but nor were they always inclined to follow them. Cross-cultural relationships between Abbotsford’s European, Chinese, Sikh, and Japanese residents were nuanced, and will be explored in the following pages.
